Set in historic Georgetown County, SC not far from the bustling beaches of Myrtle Beach is Huntington Beach State Park. The 2500 acres that make up the park’s grounds were leased from the Brookgreen Trustees in 1960. It is named for Anna and Archer Huntington. The Huntington’s purchased four former rice plantations in the late 1930s to create their winter home, Atalaya. The Moorish style castle still stands on the park grounds and is open to the public.
There is a nominal fee to enjoy the park unless guests have obtained a South Carolina State Park Pass. The park offers camping on the beach, educational facilities, picnic areas and more. The well preserved beach area allows visitors to enjoy unspoiled views of oceanfront wildlife. The park store and gift shop are open year round and offer amenities for campers and day visitors along with souvenirs. Guests may reserve shelters for group events, birthday parties or reunions. If a shelter has not been reserved they are open to all visitors on a first come, first serve basis.
Aside from camping as an obvious outdoor activity available at Huntington Beach State Park there is hiking, fishing, birding and bicycling. The two camp grounds have a combined total of 133 sites near the beach. Except for tent sites all others have water and electricity available, a few have sewer hook ups. Hot showers and restrooms are available in the bath houses.
Guests can stroll along the dune protected beach that is encircled by sea oats and loblolly pines. Located near the campgrounds is a freshwater lagoon that provides the necessary habitat for alligators and marsh hens. The salt marsh area is the nursery for sea plants and animals. Huntington Beach is known as one of the best bird-watching areas along the East Coast.
Visitors should plan to spend at least one day at the park and take advantage of the tours and educational park programs that are available. Large groups are advised to call ahead and make arrangements for accommodations.
