Myrtle Beach offers many exciting places to visit. There are quite a few that also offer educational experiences in addition to being fun. One of those places is Ripley’s Aquarium located in Broadway at the Beach from the 29th Avenue North entrance. The entry way offers a spectacular view of the various exhibits. To the right of the upper level (where visitors enter the aquarium) is the educational center where regular events and classes are hosted. The current year’s featured attraction is held in the center of the upper level.
Guests can wind their through various exhibits, just outside the featured exhibit is the Amazon River display. Here visitors find some of the Amazon’s most notorious inhabitants including the silver arawana that can jump six feet into the air and the red bellied piranha. The second level includes the Discover Center where guests can pick up and pet a horseshoe crab, crawl beneath the blow fish tank and look out at everyone around.
There are amphibians from around the world on display throughout Ripley’s Aquarium. The Living Gallery is comprised of a series of tanks hosting vibrantly colored and unusual sea life. One of the most popular attractions at the Aquarium is the Dangerous Reef. Visitors glide through on a conveyor belt similar to one found in the “Jetson’s” cartoon as sharks, sea turtles and other deep ocean denizens swim above.
On the upper or main level is the gift shop and Feeding Frenzy. Enjoy a delicious meal from Feeding Frenzy and gaze out over Dangerous Reef and watch the abundant sea life come up to the surface to watch you eat.
From May 27-Sept. 5, 2011, there will be Mermaids at Ripley’s Aquarium in Myrtle Beach. Three underwater mermaid shows will be presented each day at noon, 4pm and 8pm throughout the summer. After each show, there will be a meet and greet with the mermaids, where guests will be able to take pictures and interact with real mermaids. The Ripley’s Mermaid Boutique will be open for makeovers and souvenirs. Sign up for Mermaid Camp and learn to swim with the mermaids.
